New is...built sustainably
As well as creating beautifully designed homes of the highest quality we aim to ensure that our working practices are also efficient and sustainable.
We're building for all our futures
At Barratt Homes we have a vision that goes beyond bricks and mortar. We aim to create inspiring communities of tomorrow that fulfil our customers' every need whilst respecting today’s environment.
Our homes are thoughtfully designed and built to the highest quality, whilst the design and layout of our developments create a true sense of place. But our homes are not only great places to live; they are good for the environment and good for future generations too.

It’s this vision that has led to us receiving the Gold award for the fourth year in a row, as the top national housebuilder in the NextGeneration~ Sustainability benchmark. We are the leading housebuilder in the 2017 Carbon Disclosure Project for climate and carbon action, planning and transparency. This reflects the fact that our homes are both sustainable and energy efficient – minimising their impact on the environment, whilst reducing your energy costs too.
Sustainable ways of working
In 2017 we reduced our carbon intensity by 8% across many aspects of our business - our offices, building sites and travel, and we have improved the energy efficiency of our offices and site based activities by 1%.
We are committed to reducing our waste on site, reusing and recycling as much as possible. In fact, 95% of it gets recycled rather than ending up in landfill^. We continuously strive to be one of the most responsible developers in handling our site waste
We procure timber from sustainable sources. All of our group procured timber^, is certified by either the Forest Stewardship Council or the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC), ensuring that the wood we use to build your home is sourced responsibly. Just another reason to love your Barratt home.
It takes a lot of materials to build a new home, so we work with suppliers who can provide recycled materials, which are rigorously tested to ensure high quality. For example over 70,000 of our windows, include up to 14% recycled PVC components*.
We are also a founding partner of the Supply Chain Sustainability (Homes) School and all our construction material suppliers are now members, allowing them free access to training and information on improving the sustainability of their own business. Through this initiative we are not only leading the way in supporting our suppliers, but also encouraging them to help us solve challenging sustainability issues in a cost effective way.
Our principles in action
We know that actions speak louder than words, that's why since 2016 our decorative lighting across an estimated 500 UK showhomes was changed to help reduce carbon emmissions, by an estimated 628 tonnes every year**. We have also right-sized the plasterboard we use to build our homes, reducing the need to cut 10mm of plasterboard on every single sheet; which has reduced plasterboard wastage by an estimated 487 tonnes in 2017^. This is the level of detail we apply to ensure that building your new home doesn’t cost the earth.
Our customers love the homes we create for them, with a high satisfaction rate contributing to our 5 Star accolade from the House Builders Federation. Over 90% of new Barratt homeowners have said they would recommend us*** to their friends, and customers are particularly happy with the impact that the energy efficiency has on their household bills.
*Electricity generated is sold into the national grid via the electricity company and is sufficient to supply 282 typical new homes in a 12 month period
** We measure carbon in tonnes of carbon equivalent (CO2e), based on 8 hours running time per day 7 days per week, using 2015 DEFRA Carbon Conversion factors.
*** ‘We’, ‘our’, ‘us’ refers to the Barratt Developments PLC Group brands. Based on HBF star rating scheme from 2009 to 2018 derived from the NHBC national new homes survey (at eight weeks) over 90% of Barratt Developments PLC group customers would recommend our brands to a friend
